ALL HAIL THE QUEEN!
The movie Taken doesn’t show up on anyone’s “Top 100 Chick Flicks of All Time.” Makes sense, considering its backdrop is the underbelly of human trafficking. Plus, the film is bereft of cuddling, puppies, and gut-wrenching breakups. And, worth mentioning, violent deaths outnumber romantic gestures 80 to 1.
So then, why? Why do women swoon over it? Why do all the girly girls I know love this smash-bang ode to Jason Bourne? Why has my own mother seen it over a dozen times?!
I’ll give you a clue: The answer is found in the film’s climactic scene, where Liam Neeson’s character calmly puts a slug through the head of the dirtbag who paid for his daughter’s virginity. Do you remember what Kim says to her father in that moment, as her would-be rapist falls dead to the floor? Every woman who’s seen it does. Four simple words crowning Taken the undisputed queen of all chick flicks. Watch it again and listen closely. Right before collapsing into her father’s arms, right before the dam bursts, through reined in tears of astonishment and untold relief, Kim chokes back emotion just long enough to sputter:
“You came for me.” 24
Understand that one line, and you’ll understand the soul and longing of every woman — to be loved, to be pursued, to be fought for.
From now on, no matter what’s on the other side, you’ll bravely open slammed doors, not tiptoe past them.
[Note: Some women substitute door slamming with the silent treatment. Others get in the car, screech out of the driveway, and hunker down with a relative or close friend for a few days. Whatever the case, these same principles apply.]
